ATO Assistance for people affected by bushfires

by | July 28, 2014

Prime Minister, Acting Assistant Treasuer

ATO assistance for taxpayers affected by bushfires.

The ATO has announced that it has automatically deferred the lodgement and payment dates (excluding large PAYG withholders) for various monthly and quarter activity statements to 29 April 2013 for taxpayers in certain postcodes affected by recent bushfires. It said refunds will also be fast-tracked for taxpayers directly affected by the bushfires in Tasmania, New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland and they will have additional time to lodge activity statements.

“You do not need to apply for a deferral or a faster refund, it will happen automatically for people in postcodes affected by the disaster, - check our website to see if your region is included, " Tax Commissioner Chris Jordan said.

"We understand that for many people their tax affairs are the last thing on their minds right now."

"When people are ready, we will make sure they are supported in dealing with their tax obligations."

The ATO can also provide more time for people to pay tax debts and can help reconstruct tax records where documents have been destroyed. People can get more information about assistance at ato.gov.au or by calling 1800 806 218. If you have other lodgement or payment obligations during this period and need additional time or assistance, please ring the ATO on 13 28 61.

Information on affected postcodes and new lodgement dates can be found on the ATO website.
