THE OAKS community is in shock after a brief but violent storm lashed the town on Saturday night, destroying its heritage-listed airfield.

It wasn’t just The Oaks which copped the brunt of the severe thunderstorm. Wollondilly SES also responded to calls in Belimba Park, Oakdale, Theresa Park and Orangeville.

Residents from the local community converged in its aftermath to lend a hand in the clean-up effort, along with chief flying instructor David Rolfe. His wife, Rhonda, 64, said the cost of the damage was hard to estimate.

“That’s what the whole thing is about, everybody coming together and they all do that. As soon as somebody is in a bit of trouble everybody comes together and helps out,” Ms Rolfe said.

“We’ve had phone calls today from Wollongong, people down there saying, ‘if you need a couple of extra hands let us know, we’ll bring a team up’,” she said.
