Kilmore SES hears the call - Newspaper House

KILMORE SES volunteers have gone into the heart of New South Wales flood zones in response to a call for assistance from the storms that have ravaged the state.

“The members are passionate about the work they do and jumped at the chance to support their fellow colleagues in NSW in their time of need,” Kilmore SES Unit Controller George Mardikis said.

“Their support is greatly appreciated and who have taken time away from their families.”

The call was sent out last Tuesday, and VIC SES has now deployed 80 volunteers and taskforce commanders to assist in the Sydney and Hunter Regions, and a State Liaison Officer to the NSW State Operations Centre in Wollongong.

As part of this, four members from the VICSES North East Region departed for Sydney on Wednesday, including two members from the Kilmore Unit, Mary-Ellen Dunleavy and Terry Kift, one each from the Rutherglen and Wodonga Units.

Members are expected to be deployed for five days, along with their deployment, and numerous roof top safety kits will also accompany the members for crews to utilise.

“I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that entering floodwater is extremely dangerous,” Mr Mardikis said.

“Drivers, parents and children need to be aware of what’s in that water and ensure they never enter floodwater.”

“Staying out of floodwater is an important part of keeping you and your family safe. Luckily, there are other simple ways you can prepare yourself, such as having a home emergency kit and knowing where you’ll find information in an emergency.”

For emergency help in floods and storms, please call VIC SES on 132 500.

For life threatening emergencies, please call triple zero (000)
