Lambton High Shool students impress at 2013 Australian Fire Cadet Championships - Newcastle Star
THEY were one man down, inexperienced and outnumbered but they knew how to do one thing - beat the odds.
Last week, five Lambton High School students placed sixth overall in the 2013 Australian Fire Cadet Championships at Myuna Bay.
The biennial event is co-hosted by NSW Rural Fire Services and NSW Rural Fire Services Association for cadets aged 12 to 16 years old.
This year, the Hunter SES was invited to the championships, given that it conducts a 10-week cadet program through local high schools.
This was the only preparation the Lambton High team underwent - it did not include firefighting drills.
The students competed against 25 fire cadet teams in eight challenges including the portable pump relay; two lines two lengths drill; hose and hydrant drill; light tanker and hand tool; station response and knapsack drill; tanker and ladder; two tanker and team challenge.
The Lambton High students placed second in the team challenge event.
Hunter region SES learning development officer Robyn Barco said the students showed outstanding teamwork and were great role models for Hunter SES.
FIRING: SES cadets Jacinta Pinkerton, Tom Ellis, Hannah Murphy, Ida Topic and Shaun Farmer take on a NSW Rural Fire Services team in the hose and hydrant drill.
