Queanbeyan SES crews rescue 12 campers trapped by floodwater in Braidwood - The Canberra Times

Twelve campers trapped by floodwater were rescued on Thursday morning from a property in Wyanbene, about 40 minutes outside Braidwood.

A group of 21 international tourists involved in an adventure tour found themselves cut off due to rising floodwaters and alerted emergency services of their predicament on Wednesday night.

With floodwater rising, the tour group leader called upon regional emergency services to help 12 of the group get safely out of the area so they could board international flights in Sydney on Thursday evening.

NSW SES Regional Controller for the southern highlands Colin Malone said after the initial alert, emergency service crews remained in regular phone contact with the group throughout the night.

"They notified us yesterday afternoon they were isolated," he said.

"We would like to commend the hiking tour company. They had the foresight to identify the risk and contact us. So we assisted in the transport to get them out safely."

Six NSW SES members were involved in the operation, four from Queanbeyan and two from Braidwood.

The rest of the camping group are continuing on with their hiking adventure in the district, but Mr Malone said it was unlikely an operation of this kind would be needed again so long as the wet weather held off.
