Search for missing bushwalker wraps up after 17 days - ABC News

One of the biggest searches ever in the Central West has wrapped up after finding no sign of bushwalker, Sevak Simonian.

A search in the Kanangra Boyd national Park near Oberon finished yesterday up after hundreds of searchers found no verifiable signs of the missing Sydney man who is aged 21.

Mr Simonian was last seen leaving his home at Belrose in Sydney on the night of October 20 and he's believed to have gone for a day hike in the rugged and steep National Park the following day.

Central West SES Controller Craig Ronan said it had 100 volunteers from across the state.

"We had people from the metropolitan area, people from Wollongong and people from the Ryde and Ku-rin-gai we had people from the Armidale Unit and Forbes and Condobolin," Mr Ronan said.

"So we had our people trained in land search and vertical rescue to give people some experience and exposure in this type of land search so it was a huge effort to support the police to look for this missing person."

He said volunteers put in 1000s of hours.

"Because the search was held during weekdays people would have taken annual leave or they would have taken a day off work to come and assist when you think about it is an amazing effort."

Mr Ronan said the community in and around Mr Simonian's home suburb of Belrose raised $12,000 to help the SES in the search.

He said it was given to police to help support an air search over the weekend.

Police said Mr Simonian's parents, Massis and Rosa, have thanked all those that helped look for their son.
