SES can stop filling sandbags as flood emergency winds down - Coffs Coast Advocate
STATE Emergency Services local controller Bill Roffey is finally able to take a breather as the Mid North Coast's latest weather emergency winds down.
He said final weather alerts have been issued and while Waterfall Way remains closed 5km west of Bellingen, the worst is over.
"Once again we are grateful to the community who have again shown willingness to help themselves when there are problems," he said.
"There were a couple of hairy situations but generally it's been handled fairly well."
One of the last call-outs was around 2.30pm Saturday when a vehicle became stranded while crossing a flooded causeway near the Orara Valley sporting fields outside Coramba.
SES volunteers were able to remedy the situation and police were later noticed waiting on higher ground to have a deep and meaningful discussion with the driver.
For lovers of statistics, Coffs Harbour SES and helpers filled 7000 sandbags with 57 cubic metres of sand.
Bill said anybody with sand is welcome to spread it on the garden - or if they wish, return it to Brelsford Park and tip it on to the mound in readiness for the next time it's needed.
