SES receives calls for help as severe weather warning issued for Canberra - ABC News
Consistent heavy rain in Canberra in the last 24 hours has seen a dozen calls to the ACT State Emergency Service (SES) for assistance.
A low pressure system off the New South Wales south coast brought heavy rain to Canberra and the surrounding districts.
Canberra received almost four millimetres of rain in just half an hour this morning.
More than 13mm of rain was recorded between midnight and 9:00am.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for Canberra, the Southern and Central Tablelands and Illawarra districts.
Damaging winds averaging between 50 and 60 kilometres per hour were predicted, with gale-force gusts of up to 90kph.
The ACT SES received 12 calls for assistance this morning, mostly for leaking roofs.
The SES advised that people should move cars under cover or away from trees, secure loose items and keep clear of fallen power lines.
The clouds should clear overnight, with a mostly sunny forecast expected for the beginning of next week.
