SES volunteer Walter Blumenfeld, 85, hangs up his harness one last time - ABC

After 37 years as a volunteer for the State Emergency Service (SES) in Belconnen, 85-year-old Walter Blumenfeld is retiring.

He said he hoped stepping back from the SES would give him more time with his wife and grandchildren.

Belconnen SES unit commander Clive Gibbs said Mr Blumenfeld's long service was remarkable — not just because he was the oldest SES volunteer in Canberra, but because the average time volunteers serve is five years.

"What can I say about Wally — he is a legend," Mr Gibbs said.
