THE largest storms of the season could hit parts of northern NSW tomorrow.

The Richmond Tweed SES has issued a warning saying there is a 90% chance of a severe storm developing over the Lismore region.

It may contain large hail over 2cm, damaging winds over 90km/h and heavy rain leading to flash flooding.

"All storms of this nature have frequent dangerous lightning," the SES warning said.

The forecast will be revised, but at this stage it is expected the storm will hit around 4pm tomorrow afternoon.

Meanwhile, a spectacular lightning display lit up the skies across the Northern Rivers on Tuesday night.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the storm cell ranged from Tenterfield in the west to the coast, and from Nambucca up to the Queensland border.

The storm hit Ballina around 11pm where it only dropped 0.6mm of rain, whereas out west at Busbys Flat they recorded 12mm and at Murwillumbah, 13mm.

Temperatures are expected to get as high as 40 degrees today at Casino, with 38 the expected top in Lismore and a much more manageable 30 degrees at Byron Bay.

There is a 70% chance of rain and possible thunderstorms later today.

Temperatures will generally drop on Thursday and Friday with tops of 30 and 33 degrees predicted for Ballina and Lismore respectively tomorrow.
