Homebush's Aquatic Centre was evacuated as firemen fought a grass blaze that spread to the car park and destroyed more than 40 vehicles, police reported.

Explosions could be heard as a grass fire moved rapidly between cars in the car park.

The blaze was being tackled by 15 rural firefighters and Strathfield SES.

“From time to time our Strathfield SES volunteers are called to assist other agencies with serious incidents,” Strathfield SES Local Controller Darrin Parkin said.

“Strathfield SES volunteers were called to assist with a tree threatening after a fire at an Olympic Park carpark on Sunday afternoon.”

“With felling assistance from Canada Bay SES, Strathfield SES volunteers removed the tree, controlled traffic, and monitored the immediate area.”

“ Strathfield locals should make sure their homes are prepared for high winds and storms.  The best time to prepare is now, not when the storm is approaching,” said Mr Parkin.
