The SES on hand to improve the health of Yarradda Lagoon near darlington Point - NSW Office of Environment and Heritage

Volunteers from the Coleambally Unit NSW SES have assisted the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage by sandbagging a channel which will allow environmental water to reach hundreds of ancient river red gums surrounding the lagoon.

SES Deputy Region Controller – Murrumbidgee Region, Jon Gregory, said the exercise was a valuable opportunity for the volunteers.

“The project is a win – win for both organisations,” Mr Gregory said.

“Temporarily blocking the fill channel will increase the depth of the lagoon, allowing water to reach hundreds of ancient trees that have been dry since 2012.

“As an added benefit, the sandbagging exercise has provided a valuable opportunity for the Murrumbidgee Shire – Coleambally SES Unit members to practice their skills in the field,” he said.
