THIRTY State Emergency Service personnel and four police on trail bikes are continuing the search in Sydney's west today for an elderly man missing since Thursday.

Norman Woodford, 76, was last seen leaving his work at a museum on Gardenia Avenue at Emu Plains around 1.30pm.

It is believed Mr Woodford drove to his nearby home on Government House Drive before leaving there on foot.

His wife reported him missing about 8.30am the following day when he hadn't returned.

SES crews from Penrith and the Blue Mountains have resumed the search this morning along the banks of the Nepean River.

They are assisting general duties police and four officers on trail bikes in and around surrounding bushland.

Police have concerns for the man's welfare because he suffers from bipolar and other medical conditions which require daily medication and are exacerbated on hot days.

He does not have a mobile phone but is understood to have his wallet with a small amount of cash.

Officers from Penrith local area command have conducted extensive patrols and searches but are yet to find any trace of him.

Mr Woodford is described as being of caucasian appearance with an olive complexion, 165cm tall, slim build, with a shaved and balding head.

Penrith Chief Inspector Damon Cox said Mr Woodford's disappearance was out of character.

``If anyone sees anyone of that age wandering around could they contact police immediately,'' he said.
