IT'S been a wild afternoon in Sydney's north where strong winds have felled trees, police have been forced to call in extra resources and 30,000 homes and businesses have been blacked out.

The weather turned ugly shortly after 3pm, forcing local SES crews to scramble to a number of jobs.

Power cuts have been reported in Beecroft, Cheltenham, Pennant Hills, Thornleigh, Waitara, Hornsby, Mt Kuring-gai and Berowra.

Main roads including the notoriously busy Pennant Hills Rd were thrown into traffic chaos when traffic lights failed and police were called in to restore some order. Lights were out from Normanhurst to Waitara.

RouteM60 buses are delayed up to 30 minutes in Normanhurst due to heavy traffic on Pennant Hills Rd.
