Bones found in park confirmed as human - Illawara Mercusy

Wollongong police have confirmed human bones discovered on Friday in Royal National Park near Otford are ‘‘linked’’ to a skull discovered in the same location earlier last week.

However, the remains are yet to be formally identified and a cause of death is yet to be established.

The area, about four kilometres north of Bald Hill lookout on Lady Wakehurst Drive, has been declared a crime scene since the skull was discovered by a bush walker last Monday.

On Friday, a major SES search was undertaken in a two kilometre stretch of bushland, leading to the discovery of an unknown number of additional human bones.

Around 40 SES volunteers scoured thick scrub during the search, and police divers were used to check a nearby creek bed.

A police spokeswoman said a post mortem examination had taken place yesterday and results were expected in the coming days.

‘‘The investigation to determine the origin of the bones is continuing,’’ she said.

The area will remain an active crime scene while inquiries continue and police will resume a search for more remains today.
