Breaking: Driver rescued at Storm Bay

by By Danielle Cetinski | July 29, 2014

A 52-year-old Kiama man has been taken to Shellharbour Hospital after he was rescued from the water off Storm Bay this morning.

The man was snorkelling and spearfishing with his wife fishing close by when he got into difficulty.

According to his wife, he went under three times before two men came to his aid and pulled him from the water - Kiama Tourism has reported one was Kiama Visitors Centre personnel, while the other was an electrical services contractor carrying out work at the centre at the time of the incident.

Members of the public called emergency services to the scene at about 11.20am, with Lake Illawarra Police and Kiama lifeguards the first on the scene.

Fire and Rescue NSW's Kiama unit and Kiama SES volunteers also responded to extract the diver from the rock platform.

Sergeant Kevin Hood said it was still unclear how the diver got into difficulty.

Kiama supervising lifeguard Andy Mole said the diver appeared to have shortness of breath, but was otherwise uninjured.
