Busy times for SES - Illawarra Mercury

State Emergency Service crews have responded to 424 calls for assistance in the Illawarra and South Coast in the past 48 hours.

Acting deputy region controller Alex McFadden said the majority of jobs were centred around the Shellharbour city area.

She said eight SES crews had been mobilised, with most of the jobs involving volunteers fixing leaking roofs and protecting properties at risk of flooding.

Ms McFadden said the flooding risk was still present for large parts of the South Coast.

‘‘There is a severe weather warning still in place for the South Coast and rain is continuing to affect southern parts of the Illawarra,’’ Ms McFadden said.

‘‘We are continuing to receive calls for assistance in Moruya, Batemans Bay and Ulladulla as the storm cell continues to move south.’’

Ms McFadden said while the heavy rain was shifting away from the Illawarra, there was still the risk of further flooding in the event of another downpour.

‘‘We always work quickly to address any needs of the community, but the flash flooding that occurred on Monday night happened very quickly,’’ she said.

‘‘Should we see rainfalls increase that is something we are mindful of and will be responding too aas soon as possible.’’
