A large search is continuing for a nine-year-old boy who vanished on his way home from school in southwest Sydney.

Nathan Parker disappeared after leaving Canley Vale Public School about 3pm (AEDT) on Tuesday.

Police have said he usually walks from the school to his home on Duke Street, just over a kilometre away.

His family raised the alarm about 7pm last night and police launched a search in the area, but weren't able to find him.

A police spokeswoman said Nathan was still missing on Wednesday morning and a police command centre had been set up on Duke St.

She said 'additional resources' were being deployed for the search.

'We've had Polair, police rescue, the dog unit and the riot squad out overnight as well as local police,' she told AAP.

'This morning we're told that council staff and SES will be joining all those other people.'

She said the search was focused near a nearby reserve where Nathan liked to play.

He is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 150cm tall with a medium build, short, light brown hair and blue-green eyes.

When last seen he was wearing his school uniform - a light blue shirt and shorts - and he may be carrying an orange and blue backpack.

Police say the disappearance is out of character.
