by | July 29, 2014

The NSW SES, as part of the Triple Zero Awareness Working Group, has assisted to develop a new emergency smartphone app. The app called Emergency+ can be downloaded to iPhone and Android smartphones and provides users with the ability to directly dial the correct number for help in emergency and non-emergency situations.

The numbers provided by the app include Triple Zero (000) for emergencies, 132 500 for SES flood, storm and cyclone assistance and 131 444 for non-emergency Police Assistance Line.

Information on other national numbers – Crime Stoppers, Health Direct and National Relay Service – will also be available on the app. With 65% of calls to Triple Zero made from mobile phones, often callers cannot provide emergency operators with their exact location.

The app overcomes this problem by using the caller’s smartphone’s GPS functionality to provide latitude and longitude/GPS coordinates, a street address if available, and a map image. The Emergency+ app is available, free of charge, on iOS and Android devices through the Google Play store and Apple App Store
