Fierce storms dodge Valley - Ballina Advocate

THE Clarence Valley dodged a weather bullet at the weekend, with little damage done from a line of severe storms that came through the region.

Local SES crews were called out twice to Corindi on Saturday and three times in Coffs Harbour.

SES media officer Megan Hill said the Clarence crews were bracing for the worst when they saw radar images of the storms building up late on Saturday afternoon.

"It look pretty grim, there was lots of red in the images meaning hail," she said.

"But we avoided the worst of it."

Ms Hill said while the Valley escaped largely unscathed other areas were not so lucky.

"The Tablelands copped it and the Sydney Metropolitan area also had a lot of activity," she said.

"We need to remind people it's still early in the storm season."

The Bureau of Meteorology predicts the storms will die away as a trough over the area weakens.

"We're going to have showers, but the storm cells shouldn't be building up," said Ashleigh Wilson from the Coffs Harbour BOM office.

"We had a tornado warning out for today, but it seems the storm cells are collapsing this afternoon.

"Later in the week our weather is going to come under the influence of a high pressure system that will move through about Wednesday."
