Major storm warning for NSW, - Ninemsn
Parts of NSW are set to be battered by severe thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and damaging winds, the Bureau of Meteorology has warned.
The bureau issued an alert at 2pm for residents across a vast swathe of inland NSW and the ACT, stretching from Cooma to just south of Cobar.
Canberra, West Wyalong, Young, Yass and Condobolin are expected to be affected.
The SES has advised residents to move their cars under cover or away from trees, unplug computers and other applications and to avoid using the phone.
People are also warned to stay indoors and away from windows and to keep clear of fallen power lines, creeks and storm water drains.
Sydney will also face showers and the chance of a storm.
Meanwhile, the Bureau has warned of the risk of flash flooding and large hailstones in southern Tasmania.
Hobart, Oatlands and Richmond are likely to be affected.
"SES particularly ask parents and carers of school children to take care when driving to collect children this afternoon and to ensure they go straight home and remain indoors," SES Assistant Director George Cretu said.
