Paul has given 30 years to SES but doesn't need thanks - The Daily Examiner

The State Emergency Service slogan perfectly captures the spirit of Paul Jones' volunteer work.

Paul (or PJ as his mates call him) is a member of the Clarence Nambucca Region SES and a volunteer reptile trainer for WIRES.

He's one of the longest serving SES members in Grafton and has been wearing the orange uniform for 30 years.

Today is International Volunteers Day - a day to recognise people like Paul, who do good deeds without expecting anything in return.

Today is the day we say thanks to our volunteers.

For Paul, job satisfaction is payment enough for his time and efforts.

"It keeps me young," the 77-year-old said with a grin.

"I love the camaraderie and I'm learning new skills all the time." Paul said he had no intention of leaving the SES anytime soon.

"I'll stick with it as long as I can," he said.

"The guys know what I can and can't do... I hope I'm still with SES in five years' time."

Paul recalled a flood where he was helping to deliver supplies.

"We were in a flood boat and we had to duck our heads to fit under the Grafton Bridge... that's how high the water was," he said.

"I've met some good mates through SES... if ever you need help, they just jump in and give you a hand."
