TWO flood rescues were carried out in Milperra and Canterbury this afternoon as SES rescuers battled a torrential downpour.

Ashford Ave in Milperra was closed while SES personnel fought through flash floods to save people trapped in their cars.

Bexley Rd in Canterbury was the site of a similar scene.

An SES spokeswoman said Ashford Ave and Bexley Rd were often subject to flash floods during heavy rain.

She said the incident this afternoon in Bexley Rd involved a man driving his car directly into the floodwaters before the engine died.

“We have a car there now warning people not to drive on, but people are continuing to drive into the floodwaters,” she said.

“Even a teaspoon of water is enough to conk out your engine.”

She urged people to avoid driving through floodwaters and to listen to the instructions of SES personnel.

“The road might be completely washed away under that water, you just don’t know,” she said.

Bankstown SES commander David Niven said there had earlier been flooding from Stacey St in Bankstown along to Ashford Ave.

“We’ve also had a fair few calls about leaky roofs,” he said.

Bankstown had received 56mm of rain by 1pm today.

The SES has advised that wet weather will continue for the next 48 hours.

Drivers have been advised to travel slowly and carefully on the roads.
