SES volunteers clean up after strog winds - Weeekly Times
Volunteers from NSW State Emergency Service Ryde Unit have been kept busy since strong winds hit the area last Thursday, responding to 26 requests for assistance from local residents.
After winds of up to 90 kilometres per hour swept through on Thursday afternoon, that night three crews plus and arborist team, cherry picker and crane worked until the early morning to remove fallen trees from homes that caused significant roof damage and some with the complexity of contact with electricity lines.
NSW SES Ryde Unit Local Controller Keiran Gibson said the official storm season runs until March and that wind damage was one of the most destructive storm elements.
“Some basic maintenance, such as trimming over hanging branches, clearing gutters and drains, securing lightweight objects such as trampolines and garden furniture and moving cars undercover can help prevent storm damage,” Mr Gibson said.
Ryde Unit will host a Community Information Night next Monday December 16 at their headquarters, 137 Wicks Road, Macquarie Park from 8pm to 9.30pm for anyone interested in learning more about the SES’s role and local volunteering opportunities.
Members are of all ages, from 18 and up, and have a diverse range of backgrounds and careers. For emergency help in storms and floods call NSW SES on 132 500. Dial 000 in life threatening emergencies.
