Sydney storms: torando warning as hail hits, flash flooding fears - The Australian
by | December 16, 2015
A suburb in Sydney’s south has been declared a disaster zone after a tornado ripped through the area, while winds of more than 200km/h have torn roofs off houses and sparked evacuations across the city.
The freak storm hit Kurnell just after 10.30am and moved north, while two other storm cells have battered the Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury/Central Coast regions. By 1pm thunderstorms had hit Sydney’s eastern suburbs with three levels of Westfield Bondi Junction being evacuated due to a partial roof collapse.
One shopper was hit by debris and was treated by paramedics at the scene for minor injuries, a Westfield spokeswoman said. More than 90 stores were forced to stop trading during one of the centre’s busiest trading times of the year.
