THE threat of a tsunami on the Northern Rivers coast is low but real, so the SES has joined forces with Surf Life Saving NSW to launch the TsunamiSafe website to keep people informed.

Over the past 200 years, more than 30 tsunamis have affected the NSW coastline, with marine and foreshore threats being more common than land inundation.

Marine and foreshore tsunamis can involve dangerous rips, waves and strong ocean currents that can cause damage to marinas and wash away boats.

SES Richmond Tweed Region Controller Kaylene Jones said the NSW SES TsunamiSafe website explained the first signs of a tsunami which people should keep an eye out for and how the public would be warned in the event of a potential threat.

She said the website was an essential information tool for holidaymakers and people living in coastal communities along the east coast of NSW.

"While the risk of tsunami on the east coast of Australia is quite low, the risk still exists and we need to be aware, informed and prepared in case a tsunami does happen," she said.

"This new website provides preparedness information and what steps to take in the event of a tsunami."

Surf Life Saving NSW manager Andy Kent warned people not to ignore warnings and stay in the water or converge on the shoreline to watch a tsunami event.

"If a warning is issued to clear the water and foreshore, it is imperative that the public heeds those warnings," he said.
