WOW, the unpaid hours of our SES crews are staggering - The Coffs Coast Advocate

NEW South Wales SES volunteers will be in the spotlight next week.

With the help of NRMA Insurance, the NSW SES will be celebrating Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW) with schools, businesses, buildings and landmarks will going orange to recognise the invaluable input of volunteers.

The public can join in by wearing orange too.

Over the past 12 months, NSW SES volunteers contributed more than 260,000 hours to help the people in need by attending16,484 storm and flood jobs.

They responded to 604 road crashes, helped the NSW Rural Fire Service on 851 bushfire support tasks and responded to 447 tasks for remote medical assistance through the NSW SES Community First Responder Units.

Locally in the Clarence-Nambucca Region alone, 342 volunteers spent 2010 hours training and 7000 hours helping people in times of emergency.

NSW SES Clarence-Nambucca Region Controller Caroline Ortel said WOW Day is an opportunity for the community to recognise this tremendous contribution.

"WOW Day is a great way for the public to show their support of our selfless and committed volunteers who sacrifice their time away from families and work to help their community in times of need. It's also an opportunity for people to consider joining the NSW SES to give back to their community," Mrs Ortel said.

"Seeing people wearing orange and decorating their workplaces and communities shows how much support there is for our volunteers who who are there purely to help out someone when times are tough."
