The NSW SES Volunteers Association today announced it would recommence fundraising for its support for emergency service volunteers via raffle ticket sales.
This follows extensive consultation with the Commissioner of the NSW State Emergency Service, Adam Dent.
"Volunteers attending jobs have been overwhelmed with support from the community," said Charlie Moir, NSW SES VA President.
"As the president of the organisation of volunteers supporting volunteers, the NSW SES VA, I couldn't be more proud of the efforts the men and women who make up the SES have put in," he said.
Due to the severity of storms and flooding in the Hunter, Sydney metropolitan and Illawarra areas last week, and in order to better protect the public from unauthorised fundraising, the NSW SES VA temporarily suspended its raffle ticket sales.
"The NSW SES VA recognises that while emergency situations always bring out the best in our volunteers, unfortunately they can also bring out the worst in others who might exploit such situations for their own personal gains," said Mr Moir.
"However in light of people asking how they can support SES volunteers, the VA has made the decision to begin limited telephone raffle ticket sales outside of the worst affected areas, so community members are able to show their support once again."
Funds raised enable the NSW SES VA to provide volunteers with a number of support schemes including grants, scholarships and a welfare fund.
"The Volunteers Association was set up to support members of the SES who so freely give their time to support their communities in times of need," Mr Moir said.
The New South Wales SES VA is the only organisation authorised by the NSW SES to conduct fundraising for the purpose of supporting the SES volunteers. It is a charity registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission.
Raffle ticket sales will recommence from 9.00am on Friday May 1.
